Christmas break means lot of time to make family memories. Luckily, the store I work for is closed until January 15th so that means I get to hang out with my kids a bunch. We have also seen lots of extended family over the break which has been great. But there’s only so many times you can play Jenga or Bingo without getting bored!
That’s why we had a multi-generational trip to the movies over this break to see the latest Star Wars movie The Last Jedi. We almost broke the bank but did find ways to save money on the big outing.
- We ate before we got to the movies. If the tickets aren’t already high enough, then purchasing food at the movie concessions can send you to the poor house! The theater we visited charge $5.50 for a medium Coca-Cola. HUH? Eat before you get there so you won’t be in the snacking mood.
- Go during the matinee prices or deal day. For the theater we visited, regular pricing is $11.39 for adults, $8.89 for kids, and $9.20 for seniors. Matinee pricing is $6.69 for adults & seniors, and $6.39 for kids. With two seniors, 2 adults, and 3 kids we saved $21.92 by going during the matinee verses at night. This was on a weekday so we saved even more because prices go up on the weekend for this theater.
- Search for movie promotions. We happened to get some buy one get one free Emoji movie tickets from a kid’s meal awhile back. Going during the matinee with coupons saved us even more money. Instead of paying nearly $50 during an evening show without free coupons, we saw a movie for only $20 for our family of 5! SCORE!
Other ways to save money… sneak in candy(I know I’m terrible), wait for reviews to come to make sure it’s worth going to the theater, or wait until the movie gets moved to a less expensive theater if available.
The NUMBER ONE way to save money? Not go to the theater to watch a movie, but let’s face it. Seeing a giant Federation destroyers ship thing getting blown up on the big screen with surround sound is so much better that a small television with tiny speakers! Sometimes, it’s worth the splurge to use these tips and enjoy the experience.
