I have a knack for finding quirky a roadside pit stop (remember Uranus, Missouri?).
Sinead O’Conner once belted out, “Nothing compares to you!!!” which is a bit of an understatement for Monster Mart a quirky roadside pit stop in Fouke, Arkansas off I-49. We stumbled upon this gem one day driving home from my in-laws. There are no signs on the interstate giving you a heads up about this gas station so keep your eyes out for the Fouke, Arkansas exits.
It’s right across from an oh-so-ordinary EZ mart gas station with their fancy pay at the pump machines. Who would want that kind of roadside pit stop? Monster Mart is old school with pay after you fill up tanks. I’m guessing anyone who stops here isn’t just in it for the fillup. Why go for predictable gas pumps and a predictable convenience store when you could learn about the history of the Boggy Creek Monster?
Inside there is a living room sized “museum” with free admission. It has a couple of large glass cases with artifacts such as a plaster cast of a footprint of the Boggy Creek Monster and other things like an old wasps nest. Also are signed movie posters and signed photos from people from TV shows that hunt mythical monsters(or are they myths?).
I made the mistake of watching this movie with the kids. BIG MISTAKE. It was a B rate horror movie but still scary! Especially for my kids since we never watch anything scary. It was also ridiculous with the typical horror movie rule… leave everyone and go some place dark, go camping even though monsters are in the woods, etc. Anywho, there are a couple different Boggy Creek Monster movies out there. I’m going to check out some more and see if I can make it through them. I’m most interested in the movie that started all the hype… The Legend of Boggy Creek.
This is a convenience store but also has a mini souvenir shop with T-shirts, post cards, and random things. My youngest loves stopping here. He has gotten a tiny glass bottle of “swamp water” and also a Boggy Monster search kit. LOL He’s so cute and funny! I’ve purchased a postcard and am seriously thinking about getting an over-sized T-shirt.
Which I used for the BAD HAIR DAY T-shirt on my Etsy shop UpperHalfLaughs….
If you are traveling on I-49 between Texarkana and Shreveport, be sure to take the Fouke, Arkansas exit 16, to break up the monotony of a road trip. This roadside pit stop a great potty stop. Plus, this is a good place to stretch your legs and entertain yourself and kids.
