Welcome to Marvelous Tips Mondays, a series of posts each Monday filled with tips from eliminating stinky feet to how to dig for diamonds.
Today’s tip is How to Stop Negative Thinking. Negativity is easy to find: in the media, at stores, from other people, and even from ourselves. Have you ever evaluated your own thought process? Have you noticed when you talk with others that your focus is on the negativity and you aren’t accentuating the positive? Are you focusing continuously on one specific negative thought?
Ok, I know it’s not that easy. But I’ve heard of this idea from a counselor I once went to and also a family member that reminded me of it. Here’s what you do – get a sheet of paper out and write the word STOP on it in bold letters and No Negative Thinking Allowed. (Feel free to copy and print this image below.)
Now the hard part is paying attention to your thoughts. As soon as you recognized a negative thought brewing in your brain, physically look at the stop sign. Now think a positive thought. Flip that negative thought on its hills! Maybe it’s how you can overcome the negativity or maybe how you can move on from where the negativity originates. Maybe you need to journal these thoughts and speak with a professional on ways to overcome.
I don’t want anyone to think that I never have negative thoughts after using the STOP paper for a couple months. It still happens. When I initially started practicing this, I looked at the STOP paper several times an hour and then after a while several times a day and eventually after several months I hardly ever look at the STOP paper. Every once in a while under stress, I’ll let myself slip back to negative thoughts. Then I get out my paper or have a talk with my sisters or friends and I’m back on track.
