The summer months bring excitement, relaxation, barbecues, and vacations. The safety of your home is probably the last thing on your mind. And believe it or not, burglars take full advantage of that. Within just minutes your relaxing summer can turn into a disaster. In order to avoid someone from breaking into your home this summer, keep the following tips in mind.
Going on vacation? Take some extra time before you leave to ensure the house does not look empty. Two major giveaways for a burglar are a full mailbox and an unmaintained yard. Consider hiring someone to mow your lawn while you’re away. Have a trustworthy neighbor or family member get your mail every day. Oh, and that key you keep under your doormat? Give that to someone you trust, just in case!
Cool Summer Night? Keep those windows and doors closed and locked, even when you’re home. 72% of burglars enter your home through an unlocked door or window. As tempting as that fresh and nice breeze might be, it’s not worth the risk.
Day trip with the family? Avoid posting on social media while you’re away from home. Of course, you want to share the pictures of your kiddos going down their first waterslide. Wait to post the pictures until you’re back home. Believe it or not, almost half of all burglar’s know their chosen victims and are probably friends with you on social media.
While these are all good things to keep in mind, as best practices to protect your home all year here are a few things to consider. Make sure you maintain your landscaping. Large shrubs and trees make the perfect hideout for intruders. Install motion sensor lights near all entrances to your home. Both front and back. And lastly, as an extra line of defense, consider getting a security system to help protect your family and home.
