Good stuff!
Three additional tips: (1) wear goggles, (2) do this in the cooler portion of the day and when the sun is low or when it’s overcast, and (3) thoroughly wet down all nearby vegetation with plain water first before you apply the cleaning solution; it will kill it if you don’t.

Pressure/power washing is really useful when it comes to cleaning. Thanks for this!
Jonathan Hufana says
This is a big help! Thanks!
Adam Smith says
I had to get power washing services last month. My suggestion is for you to not set the highest pressure settings just yet. Get used to the machine first and gradually work your way around the settings. According to professional cleaners, you should always start with lowest settings when cleaning your house or deck
Cindy Magee says
Great idea!

This is a great article, very informative and helpful. I must point out one thing though, some pressure washers can.. well.. put out a lot of pressurized water! So much so that people have actually cut a toe off while using one! Next time, wear some closed toe shoes so you can minimize an unfortunate injury!

Yikes! That’s a great point! Thanks for the tip!

Hey Cindy,
What a fantastic post, I love nothing more than using my pressure washer and like you have suffered the end result which is a clean patio/siding but messy legs, face etc, so very good recommendation for the safety glasses.
These days I may sure to put my wellies on before trudging out with the pressure washer. I see that you used the pressure washer without any form of soap and it worked just fine, do you think the introduction of soap would help or reduce the time taken?
Thanks
John

I love how simple these tips for using a pressure washer is. I’ve also got a small bird problem as well, especially since the mess the birds left behind isn’t pretty. A part of me is considering hiring a professional, so I don’t have to worry about damaging anything myself on accident.

I really liked it when you said that pressure washer has a lot of power so it is best to hold it with both hands with one hand on the trigger and the other on the wand. Just reading this made me realize that using a pressure washer is a lot of hard work. And since I am rather small, I do not think it is a job that I should do. I will just call a professional to wash the siding for me. Thank you for sharing.
Ashley Maxwell says
I appreciate your comment about how a pressure cleaner should be used with safety gear. I also like how you said that they should also be strong enough to get lots of dirt off of our stones, cement, etc. My husband and I are considering looking for a pressure washer to clean our driveway off.
Mary washing techniques says
Great tips, I think used low pressure washing techniques that are best & will protect your home and plants/flowers.
Marty M. says
Short but good post, Cindy.
I do have a question: so you didn’t have to spray any cleaner and let is soak in on the mess(es) you had to clean? The pressure washer alone was enough?
(Note: I hadn’t realize you should wear safety glasses with one of those. I knew a guy or two who made money traveling with pressure washers but they never mentioned it).
Thanks!

Hey! Yep, I didn’t spray anything with cleaner first. It was all done by the power of the pressure washer. Definitely, wear safety glasses/goggles. It sprays stuff all over and can easily get in the eyes if you’re not careful.

Over the past few years, I have let my home get so dirty and I feel like I shouldn’t have put it aside for so long as there are some heavy stains on it now. I liked that you had mentioned the importance of not using a pressure washer on anything that can be damaged and to be careful not to peel off paint by spraying too close. I’m worried that if I try to take out the stains that I’ll also take the paint off my home, I might have to look into having a professional handle the washing.
Marcus Coons says
It really helped when you mentioned how you should stay away from paint when using a pressure washer. I can totally see that doing this can help you avoid damaging it and make sure you get the job done right. We are planning on pressure washing our house and want to make sure we know how to do it, so I;m glad I found your post.
Adam says
Aww, I love those baby birds. Using a pressure washer to clean your patio/outside area is a fantastic idea. You’re right to give caution about getting too close to things, it’s worth noting that you also don’t want to accidentally hit someone else or your own feet with the water jet, it can leave quite the bruise.
Is there a brand you recommend and is there a reason you went for gas over electric?
Cindy Magee says
Now there is a newly built nest and some new teeny tiny babies. 🙂
I prefer the gas verses electric because it is easy to tote around. On the brand, I would suggest reading ratings. I like the Troy Bilt that we have; it’s been easy to use.
Sarah says
So sweet to see the baby birds mature and leave the nest on their own! Power washing makes everything look cleaner and brand new. It gives your patio a fresh start, just like the baby birds! Thanks for sharing your tips!

Thanks for the article! Pressure washer is a must. But don’t go for cheap, better choose Karcher or Briggs
