With more and more people becoming increasingly concerned about the quality of water their families consume on a daily basis, water filtration has also become a much more prominent issue than before. Water supply companies claim that the tap water they provide to your home is safe to drink, but even if that’s the case, it can still get contaminated before it reaches a glass.
That’s why it’s quite important to regularly monitor water quality reports issued by the water supply company and react accordingly. In case you’re not completely satisfied with the quality, or you see that once you turn on the tap the water coming out is not perfectly clear and/or smells or tastes strange, you need to consider installing some type of water filtration system.
#1 Why water filtration?
First of all, making sure that you and your family enjoy the best possible quality of water is priceless. Knowing that even if there’s a problem in the water distribution network, you’ll still be able to drink water that is not a health hazard, is another thing you can’t put a price on. Finally, the alternative is to use bottled water, which is not only more expensive, but also includes many concerns related to storing and disposal of plastic bottles.
#2 What contaminates water?
Tap water might contain all sorts of natural and artificial impurities. While it’s true that not all impurities are dangerous, there are some that might have a profound effect on your health.
Distribution companies add chlorine and fluoride to the water in order to clean it make it safe. While this is undoubtedly a positive thing, more and more people are becoming concerned about a potential risk of using these chemicals.
#3 Basic principles behind water filtration
Depending on the impurities you’re trying to eliminate, you will choose a filtration system can works on one of the following principles:
- Carbon filtration/adsorption – such filters make contaminants stick to the pores within the carbon source, which removes some particles, odour and taste in the water.
- Softeners – if your water is hard, you’ll notice deposits being built up in kettles and tubs, for example. That means there’s a large buildup of minerals in your water and a softener will reduce that.
- UV filtration – this method disinfects only clear water, which means it can’t be used in every situation, despite its efficiency.
- Reverse osmosis – a reverse osmosis filter unit physically blocks most contaminants, which makes it a very popular choice.
- Distillation – this method consumes a lot of energy, since it boils water first. Still, it’s quite efficient.
#4 Types of water filters
If you go online to look for water filters, you’ll see that there are several types for home use and that their prices vary depending on their capacity, efficiency and the technology they’re based on. You can use jug filters, which are quite inexpensive and easy to use, but require frequent filter replacement and are not really quick or tap-mounted filters, which cost about the same, but are even easier to use. The problem with them is that they slow the flow of water and are not suitable for all taps.
On the other hand, there are countertop filters that require no plumbing modifications and are easy to maintain, but they occupy the precious space on the countertop. You can choose an under-sink filter, which is more expensive and requires plumbing modifications. However, it can filter large amounts of water without cluttering up your countertop.
As you can see, it’s quite easy to ensure that the water you’re using is of good quality and there are different types of filtration methods for specific impurities found in water. The best idea is to have your water tested or obtain a copy of a water quality inspection report issued by your water supply company before choosing the right filter. Consult an expert before making the final decision and make sure you hire a licensed professional to install the water filtration system in case you don’t know how to do it. If you follow these steps, you’ll be able to enjoy good quality water for years to come.
