Nacogdoches, Texas, is a perfect little town for a weekend getaway!
My sister came up with the idea to visit the historic place when we were searching for a fun spot for my 40th birthday weekend. Going to Nacogdoches turned out to be one of my best birthday’s ever! There’s lots to see, great food, and I couldn’t have asked for better company. The “oldest city in Texas” has so much to see like Millard’s Crossing (a historical village), Stephen F. Austin State University which includes Mast Arboretum, ZipNac(zipline adventure), Splash Kingdom Waterpark, and more; but we decided to stick to the downtown area filled with historic buildings, antiques, boutique shopping, delicious dining, and an amazing art gallery.

Here’s the run down of all we saw and did…
Friday night, we all got there at different times and checked into the Super 8 , Nacogdoches, TX. This is a fairly new hotel that serves a hot breakfast included with the room. It also had a indoor pool with hot tub. Our rooms were clean and spacious and luckily adjoining. 🙂 The rates were SO reasonable! I paid something like $65 plus tax per room per night which is a bargain. The only negative was the four lane road next to had lots of traffic due to construction going on but that won’t last too much longer I’m guessing.
Since my sisters and mom and I were there a little earlier, we ate at Dolli’s Diner in downtown Nacogdoches. There’s diner food and great service. The atmosphere is laid back and includes artwork by local artists. While we were visiting there were a couple of really well done portraits of people from around town. One was of a man that is part owner at the Old Time Antiques & Collectibles store who we met the next day while shopping.
We got back to the hotel and shortly after that, my BFF since we were 14 showed up and asked for help to bring stuff up from her car (she was SO awesome to come since here knee has been jacked up since October). Of course, I was going to help her, so we go downstairs and just out of the lobby someone puts their hands over my eyes and freaks me out. Turns out another BFFs hitched a ride with her and they surprised me. That was the best gift EVER! I was so happy to see them both!!! I miss them so much. They are so thoughtful and just love me for me. They lift me up when I’m blue and point me back to God and His love for me. I heart my BFFs! I’m so lucky!
Here’s what they did to the room for my birthday…
Fun right?! Plus they brought cupcakes and snacks and themselves and bday gifts. Eeee!
So Saturday morning we all get up and get moving and eat breakfast and set out to see the sites and shopping of downtown Nacogdoches…. like this pretty little courtyard…
Then our first stop was the Nacogdoches Visitor’s Center. There were displays of different artifacts throughout the upper floor with the giant mural and then in the lower level was a mini museum of the history of the area complete with a diorama of a steamboat. The volunteers were very well informed of the history of the oldest town in Texas and were happy to answer any questions and take our group photos which was super nice!
I found the museum neat but not all in our party were as excited about museums as they were about shopping. 🙂 And shopping there is plenty of in this little downtown area – boutiques, toy store, antiques, home and decor, and art. A little bit of everything was at our finger tips – even an Old Timey Photo place called Wild Rose. The back of the store was for the Old Time Photos and the front of the store had candy and toys, even a make your own stuffed animal machine! I loved how it was decorated through the entire place and we even got a copy of our picture put up on the wall! We’re like famous in Nacogdoches!
Next door is Old Time Antiques & Collectibles. That’s where I found my keepsake for the trip. It’s an antique card with blue flowers and says “A Happy Birthday.” Yep, a happy birthday indeed! 🙂 I liked how this store felt like an old old place with different rooms to explore and a variety of goods to choose from.

We visited several boutique shops like Rhinestones Rifles which is down a side street and well worth the visit! I found this super cute shirt and love love love wearing it all the time.

Another super cute boutique store is Refuse to Sink. Lots of adorable adults and some kiddo clothes too along with shoes and accessories…
Oooo, let me tell you about lunch at the Liberty Bell. Delicious food, perfect service, and great atmosphere – what more could a person want? Their chocolate cake. Yes, if you love chocolate, don’t pass it up!

The food was DELICIOUS! We had two appetizers to share which was more than enough for all 6 of us. Then for my lunch I had the asparagus with shrimp and veggies and it was SO good! Then dessert… chocolate cake of course!
We had to walk off that food afterwards! It was so good and so much. I could have been rolled out of the restuarant. LOL Nearby were two very neat antique stores we visited! I’ll just let the pictures do the talking…
And one of the last places we stopped to shop was Goodwill at the very end of the shopping area on one street. I totally scored a wood sewing caddy for only $9!!! Here’s the before and after transformation article.
After our long day of shopping and laughing and just having fun we went back to the hotel and sweet C(another BFF) and her bestie showed up from Houston!!! They both have little babies at home and their husbands were so sweet to watch them while they drove so far just to eat dinner!!! I’m so lucky to have such sweet family and friends to spend this birthday with and life! We went to a Chinese restuarant in an outdoor shopping area and it was delicious. Because it was my birthday they took our picture and guess what? That ended up on another wall with a ton of photos. So see we are famous all over that Nacogdoches! LOL
