Holiday parties and get-togethers are coming up. Finding an outfit that coordinates with the occasion can be lots of fun but a little stressful if your wardrobe is needing an overhaul. Instead of focusing on new clothes, try updating by learning how to match jewelry to give your closet some pizzazz.
Match Jewelry with the Event
The type of jewelry you are wearing either needs to be versatile for an function or you will need to match the jewelry to the “fanciness” of the party. With the holidays coming up, you might be going to a family reunion over Thanksgiving or a work related Christmas soiree at the boss’s house.
These Art Deco Convertible Statement earrings would be perfect for an evening out on the town.
A couple years ago my husband and I attended a company Christmas party at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. It was La-Tee-Dah! So I pulled out my fanciest jewelry to match my fanciest dress that I had. The party was lots of fun (including ice sculptures and a live-ly band) and I felt beautiful with extra bling on.
For jewelry to match the party, think about the situation. For example, is it family or work related? Is it in a friends home or at an elaborate event hall? Also consider purchasing jewelry that can be at home in both scenarios. My dangling Christmas gift earrings would work great for an informal gathering but not-so-good at the fancy work party.
Match Jewelry with the Style of the Clothes
This idea is pretty straight forward but there are some guidelines that can help. For necklaces, the length of the necklace needs to match the neckline of your clothing. For example, if you are wearing a turtleneck, do not wear a choker necklace; it doesn’t really go together plus would be uncomfortable. Try instead a long chain or pendant. For low necklines that are v-neck, try a long v-shaped pendant. Shirts with a higher collar can look good with a bib, collar, long chain or pendant. Collars that are scooped, low, or strapless can look great with a choker, asymmetrical, short pendant with or without volume, and depending on the cut of the fabric a square or geometric shaped necklace.
Match Jewelry Pieces with Each Other
When I was in 4th or 5th grade, I loved wearing necklaces. At that time I also loved watching the A team. If you are old enough you might be picturing where I’m going with this… B. A. Baracus. That’s the character Mr. T played, and one of the things Mr. T was known for was layering a ridiculous amount of gold chains around his neck.
Luckily, my taste in jewelry coordination has changed. While I think that layering necklaces can look great sometimes, I don’t go overboard any more! To match jewelry like necklaces together, consider the lengths, what they are made of, and what outfit you will be wearing them with. I generally wouldn’t put a choker with an extra long chain or pendant, but some pieces like this can be put together depending on your outfit and what materials they are made of.
What about matching a necklace to earrings to bracelets? I like to mix and match. Some people like to make everything match-y match-y. It really depends on your style. Below are some examples of matching jewelry.
This is a collection that was created to coordinate by the company Chloe and Isabel. There are three things that make the pieces match perfectly: the stone, the silver tone, and the geometric shape.
This is a group of jewelry that would go great together, but these items were not created specifically to go together. I first picked the Starburst bracelet that I love and then built around it. Some of the jewelry have different geometric shapes, and some have different colored stones. These pieces all have one common theme – gold tones, ant this makes these items perfect for mixing and matching.
You could also match jewelry by silver tones, stone types, and shapes of jewelry. My favorite gem stone is amethyst so I love wearing any items that have purple. I will even mix and match silver and gold pieces as long as they have a purple stone.
How to match jewelry doesn’t have to be a stressful thing. It’s so much fun to check out the latest bling and coordinate the pieces with the event, clothing, and other jewelry you’ll be wearing. Like the example above, picking a piece of jewelry that you really love and building around it is a great way to start.
