Not too long ago, historically speaking, the average person was extremely physically active everyday. They had to be because survival generally depended on working the land, constructing things by hand, fighting, gathering food, and other such activities. These days, we live in the most sedentary times in human history as far as anyone can tell. And it’s pretty clear that, with the ongoing growth of sophisticated digital technologies, the trend probably isn’t going to reverse any time too soon. We are at a time that being physically active everyday is something that we should intentionally be including in our lives.
Here are a few reasons to be physically active everyday, whether that means attending a Cathy Roe Ultimate Dance class, going for regular nature walks, or lifting weights in the gym. It’s important to find something you enjoy doing so that you will want to continue to be physically active every day. For our family, it’s rock climbing and dancing. We are fortunate to have an indoor climbing gym in our area and also fortunate that our kids like watching YouTube for “how to” street dancing tutorials. Although, someday I do plan to take them for classes; and maybe me too!

My kids are fearless when we’re at the rock climbing gym!
Check out these 3 reasons to be physically active every day –
Because your mood and energy levels will increase dramatically
Physical exercise has been found to be as effective as medication for treating depressive disorders. If you listen to any enthusiastic runner talk, they are sure to let you know all about the famous “runner’s high” at some point.
A sense of chronic fatigue, combined with mood disorders, such as depression, are common afflictions faced by many people these days. There is every reason to believe that regular physical activity can go a long way towards helping alleviate these conditions. But even if you don’t have a specific health issue that you are combating, you’re likely to just feel better and have more energy as you get moving.
It’s always good to have more energy and to feel more upbeat, all other factors aside.

Because it will help to get you out of your own head
It’s really easy to get caught up in overthinking. This is true especially if you spend the majority of your time dealing with the abstract world that exists on websites, in YouTube videos, and so on. Of course, some degree of introspection and abstract thinking is essential. If you get this out of balance, you can easily get lost in your own spiralling thoughts, and feel worryingly disconnected from the world around you.
It’s no wonder that research has found that people who spend more time on social media are more likely to be depressed and anxious. What do social media platforms do, other than promote overthinking and status comparison. It can be a place where everyone is trying to judge whether their lives are as good as their “friends”?
Being physically active everyday is an excellent way of getting out of your own head. When you’re working up a sweat, and moving your body, you’re just not going to be “turned inwards” as much as you will be focusing on the exercise you are working on.
Because it will increase your willpower
In the book, “The Willpower Instinct,” by Kelly McGonigal, the author looks at some pretty remarkable evidence that the amount of willpower you have is largely influenced by your “Heart Rate Variability.” Interestingly enough, it seems like one of the most reliable ways of boosting this physiological metric is by doing regular exercise – especially cardio. Even beyond the physiological impact that exercise has on boosting your willpower, though, there’s a pretty clear mental effect. Working out isn’t always something you’re going to be in the mood for. So, when you push yourself to turn up and get your workout done regardless, you are naturally developing your willpower. If you can increase your willpower in this part of your life, then it stands to reason that it probably will increase in other parts of your life as well such as what you are eating everyday.
There are so many benefits for being physically active everyday! If you are not in the best health, or even if you are, have an appointment with your doctor to make sure your physical activity exercise plans are safe for you. Also consider setting a meeting with a trainer, or a coach, for the exercise you are planning on trying out. If you are home bound, find an exercise app that can be done from the comfort of your home. There are so many options to chose from to exercise daily and if one doesn’t seem just what you are looking for, try a new one. Or maybe you just need variety and want to switch the routine or type of activity you do each day. That’s great too! Just get up and get moving and start enjoying the benefits of being physically active everyday!
