Typically moving your career forward requires acquiring new skills. Some come from experience and practice. Others, on the other hand, will need you to head back to studying. However, when you’re in the middle of your professional career, heading back to school doesn’t always seem like a viable option. Most of the time, new university degrees can need anywhere between two and four years.
Are you willing to keep your career on hold for that long?
I wasn’t. This past January I started studying for the Cisco Network+ certification and am hoping to also study and pass the Security+ certification. I have an Industrial Engineering degree and worked as a Senior Process Engineer but getting my foot in the door after 10+ years of being home with the kids has been a challenge to say the least. A recruiter suggested that I take some classes and get some certifications to up my value when applying for jobs. And that’s what I’ve been doing (except for a pause in late February through April while my dad was going down hill).
Improving and proving your knowledge base with industry standard certifications can help make you more attractive to potential employers while also adding more value which in turns will add more value to your bottom line (aka paycheck). Accreditations testify to your expertise in a specific field without any of the hassles of becoming a student again although it doesn’t hurt to brush up on what you already have a solid foundation in.
Add a new financial string to your accounting bow
Someone with an accounting degree, for instance, can consider adding more strings to their finance bow. You can select a variety of industry-specific accreditations, from the oil and gas industry with the APA program – click here for more information – to not-for-profit certification for accountants who wish to work with charity organizations. Similarly, if you want to reach out to international corporations, you will also need to take additional accreditations that show you are fluent in international accounting regulations.
Accountants also can take classes to boost their knowledge regarding specific tools and technologies. These will be typically offered by tech specialists monitoring industry software solutions.
Share your skills with kids
Did you know that a lot of your skills can be transferable to the education sector? For example, if you are a trained engineer, you can find a teacher certification program such as this one to make your conversion into schools. The Praxis certifications work hand-in-hand with a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant topic for school teaching. English, foreign languages, math, biology, physics, chemistry, geography, and history are some of the many degrees that provide a solid enough background for your reconversion as a teacher. Needless to say, the accreditation program prepares you to face kids of all ages so that you can stand in front of a classroom with confidence.
Digital marketing certifications
While many business degrees will land you a job in advertising and communication, you want to add specific digital marketing accreditations to be taken seriously. Adding Google Analytics to your marketing gear is a no-brainer. Analytics certifications need to be taken frequently as Google constantly improves the platform and the data analyzing methods. You can also add social media tool certifications, paid advertising, and overall digital marketing accreditations, which can all be taken online from sources such as Google Academy, Bing, HubSpot Academy, and many more.
So you’ve been in your company for many years, but you have yet failed to land a leadership role despite your high performance. More often than not, managers are cautious about appointing executives to leadership positions without the relevant management certifications. You can find a variety of leadership programs that can deliver the certification you need within a few weeks of learning.
Are you ready to move your career to the next level? Securing the accreditations you need to convince peers of your skills offers a safe path for growth. Unlike a new degree, accreditations to move your career further require anything between a few hours to a few weeks for a fraction of the cost you’d pay to attend university.
