Ok, well, not entirely the entire four hours in my closet because some of the time I dragging junk from my closet through my bathroom to my bedroom. I was forced to be home one day for 4+ hours waiting for a package that was scheduled to arrive that needed a signature. Said package never arrived which turned out ok because I had been putting off finally organizing my closet since we moved in 5 months ago. It was definitely time….
Not the most efficient use of space – hanging purses from the bottom hanging rod…
Not the best use of the shelving available…
So how did I organize it??? Well, it did help having 4 hours with no kids and being forced to be at the house. 🙂 But here’s some practical steps to use to organize any space…
#1. REMOVE EVERYTHING FROM THE SPACE
I took out ALL. OF. MY. STUFF. Yes, every single thing. See, it all took over my bedroom and some of my bathroom…
#2. SORT – Then I went through the process of really evaluating whether or not I liked it, wore it, or was just hoarding. I also decided to ditch the mismatchy types of hangers for these pretty ones I got on super clearance at WallyWorld…
I know it’s a complete self indulgent thing to do but my OCD was standing on my should screaming in my ear, “WE MUST HAVE THEM! They ARE on sale. You’d be crazy not to get them at such a good price.” Looking back, I’m thinking I might be a little crazy – who has only one OCD standing on their shoulder?! There should be two OCDs standing on either shoulder to balance things out. Yes, that is a completely sane line of thinking.
Ok, back from my little tangent trip…
#3. GET UNWANTED ITEMS OUT OF YOUR HOUSE. EVEN IF THEY SIT IN YOUR CAR FOR WEEKS WAITING FOR THEIR SPECIAL TRIP TO A DONATION CENTER AT LEAST THEY WON’T SNEAK BACK INTO YOUR CLOSET WHILE YOU’RE SLEEPING! (YES, yes I have a strange and active imagination. I mean whose clothes would put themselves up? Certainly not mine; my clothes would lay on the floor directly in the line of traffic to be tripped on. ) So I decided to set free a garbage bag full of clothes, a couple small boxes of stuff, and the old mismatchy hangers… Ahhhhh sweet relief! Good bye pants that drag down my self esteem, see you later waahwaah tshirt that makes me look fatter than I am, later on shoes I haven’t put on weeks/months/years!
#4. PUT IT ALL BACK. BUT THIS TIME ORGANIZE BY SIZE OR STYLE OR COLOR OR CLOTHING ARTICLE, AKA DO SOMETHING TO CATEGORIZE. Here’s the final reveal! I love my clear shoe containers; I get so much more use out of the space. I do heart that all the hangers match and wow! I have so much more room now that the purses are put in a tote on the top shelf rather than hanging from hangers on the bottom rod. Also I grouped all the wrapping paper in an antique crockpot that was a great grandmothers, put clothes in order by type(pants with pants, etc), and had enough room to move the jewelry armoire instead of taking up visual space in our bedroom. All that’s left is to put some hangers/nails on the wall to hang my hats above my laundry sorter.
Ohhh I love displaying my pretty shoes! Now that all the kids are all in school I’m starting to wear my heels again. I feel so pretty with them on! 🙂
Here’s my tote of purses, the extra hangers I didn’t use, and my tote of more gift wrap stuff. Oh, and the shelf with photo albums and the one with gifts…
My vacuum! I can reach my vacuum!!! yipppeeeee!
I don’t know what it is about these hangers but some how my clothes just don’t see as messy now. 🙂
It feels so good to have gotten rid of things I jut wasn’t using any more and to free up room to be able to easily get the vacuum and wrapping paper. I also like that I made one shelf just for gifts(it has the playdough on it in the pictures). Ahhh, organizing! I feel so much better! 🙂
