It’s still hot hot hot here in Louisiana and one of the best ways to cool off is at the waterpark!
Check out these tips to consider when visiting a waterpark –
Going to the waterpark can be so much fun but keep in mind safety is of upmost importance. The park you attend should have plenty of lifeguards but be sure to keep an eye on your kids at all times. And if you have someone that is not a very strong swimmer, make sure they wear a life jacket at all times.
DON’T FORGET THE SUNBLOCK
A really bad sunburn can ruin a great day at the waterpark. Be sure to put sunblock on before even showing up at the park and then keep reapplying throughout the day. The American Academy of Dermatology Associates suggests the following – “Just make sure it offers broad-spectrum (UVA and UVB) protection, has an SPF of 30 or higher and is water-resistant.” Also keep in mind some sunblock is not suitable for young children especially 6 months or younger. It is best to use clothing to keep the sun off of little one’s skin.
WHAT TO BRING?
We’ve already talked about bringing sunblock but there are a couple more things you might want to bring. These are probably obvious – towels, a wallet or money for food and drinks, waterproof shoes, and clothes to change into after being at the water park. We had a 30 minute drive back home after our recent visit to the waterpark and it was so nice to have on dry cloths during the car ride.
PLAN TO PURCHASE FOOD AND DRINKS AT THE PARK
Most water parks do not allow outside food or drinks to be brought into the park. Be sure to check their website to find out if this is allowed or not. If you are on a tight budget, you may want to eat before going so you aren’t hungry when you get there.
RENT A LOCKER
Don’t waste your time or energy trying to keep up with your valuables while you are on the rides. Rent a locker! Generally, they will give you a locker key on a elastic or springy type bracelet that you can wear while you are enjoying all the attractions.
SPLURGE FOR THE CABANA
Most waterparks now offer cabana rentals. Sometimes these include a locker and ceiling fan and food service. There should be plenty of seating in these shaded huts. We have rented a cabana once before during a high traffic day like the weekend and it was totally worth not having to fight to a chair and being in the shade during a hot sunny day.
COUPONS, DEALS, AND AFTERNOON ENTRY
There are deals to be had when it comes to visiting waterparks! We visited Splash Kingdom recently and I found out about their deals not only from their website but also their Facebook page. They offer a much less expensive entry after 4pm during the week. They also offer surprise deals depending on how the weather is going and weekdays are less expensive sometimes as well. Depending on the time of day or coupons you might also be able to get a deal on locker rental as well.
AVOID THE CROWDS
Monday was such a great day for our trip this summer. The amount of people is sooo much less during the weekdays. When we visited on a Monday, there were literally only 6 other people in the wave pool! It was like one of my lifetime dreams had come true… to have a whole amusement or waterpark just for my family. Awesomeness!
It’s not too late to visit a waterpark this summer! Be sure bring your sunblock. And if you are reading this article in the winter, don’t forget the indoor waterparks like Great Wolf Lodge. There’s always a good time to visit a waterpark!
