Switch to LED
Besides the popularity of LED for screens, you may want to consider using it for your light bulbs throughout the home. They last longer and are more durable, and they also happen to be very energy-efficient. As outlined by the U.S. Department of Energy, these bulbs use 75% less energy than incandescent lighting and produce very little heat compared to the hot CFLs.
Plug any air leaks
Getting cozy during the colder months can come at a high expense. You might be cranking up your thermostat or taking long hot showers. One way to reduce your electricity use during the colder months is to find areas where cold blasts of air come in and plug them. This will immediately increase the temperature of your home. Since it may be overwhelming to find the best option that fits your budget, a good idea is to simply look for the “ENERGY STAR” label. If an appliance or device you’re looking at has this, then you can rest assured that it’s built to lessen a property’s emission usage.
Lessen appliance use
An easy answer is to simply lessen your use of appliances that you don’t really need. For instance, if you don’t have a large bulk of laundry, then consider just hand washing and air-drying. If you aren’t actively using it, try lowering your water heater by a few degrees. Though it seems like a basic task, maintenance can do a lot for energy consumption. Faulty wiring, broken appliances, and water leaks can significantly impact your usage if left unattended. Make sure everything is in good shape by doing a checkup every year.
With some simple adjustments to your habits, you can conserve energy effectively and, in the process, make a contribution to saving the planet.
