Visiting a dentist twice a year is a big part of taking care of yourself and be sure to speak with them about the best oral health routine you should follow daily. In between dentist visits, it’s very important to look after your oral health yourself. Even if you brush twice a day every day, there’s a good chance you’re not going far enough especially when it comes to keeping your mouth clean and safe! Sure, your teeth look good, and your mouth feels fine, but is there more than can be done to keep your mouth and pearly whites stay as healthy as possible?
Check out these ideas of what your oral health routine could also need to include below.
Brush and Floss
Brushing and flossing should be done on a daily basis – we all know this! However, it’s not as clean and simple as this.
Brushing, obviously, should be done twice a day, but it’s actually recommended that a person brush after every single meal. Leave it at least half an hour before brushing after eating, to make sure the acid has settled, and you’re not accidentally creating a storm in your mouth. Brush for at least 3 minutes, and use an alarm if need be.
Alternatively, flossing should usually be done once a day, unless a dentist has told you differently. Be sure to also clean your tongue while you’re at it; this can be done with either a brush or some floss. If you’re using floss, be sure to scrape your tongue gently with the floss.
Mouthwash is also good to use on a daily basis. Rather than being an alternative to brushing, it should be included as part of the whole routine. Instead of using water to rinse your mouth out after brushing, which can actually remove the flouride you’ve just brushed onto your teeth, use mouthwash instead. Make sure you swish with mouthwash for at least 30 seconds each time, and be sure not to swallow it either. Feel free to gargle or not, spit into the bowl, wipe your mouth, and then get on with your day!
What to Look For
When brushing your teeth, it’s a good idea to do so in front of a mirror. Being able to see your teeth and gums as you floss can help you to spot obvious worry signs or differences in our oral health.
