Exercising is good for you in many ways that include emotional, physical, and social benefits. When you are exercising to keep fit and healthy you also need to take careful consideration about your safety so you can remain healthy and injury-free when exercising. Plus, if the exercise you’re completing is safe and painless, you are much more likely to stick to the program you have put into place.

Safety in exercise is all about common sense, understanding the basic exercise techniques, and most importantly listening to your body. Afterall you know it the best. - Be fully aware of your body and it’s limitations. You need to pay close attention to how the exercise you are completing is making you feel. If something just doesn’t feel right then you should stop and reassess what the reasons could be.
- Always warm up before and cool down after any exercise. Go slowly through the motions of your exercise with the relevant stretches before you start, cool down, and then do a few more stretches to finish.
- Set yourself a pace. You shouldn’t over push yourself to the point of injury, always listen to your body. If you are experiencing any pain you need to make sure you are resting until it has completely gone.
- Try a range of exercises. There may be one particular exercise that you love, however, the worst thing you can do is over train in just one area. Try to mix-it-up and complete a range of different exercises. This is one of the reasons I love hiking so much. It means going up and down hills or just a flat trail so different muscles can be exercised with each new trail.
- Protect your vulnerable areas. It’s very common for people to have areas that are more prone to injury, make sure you take steps like strapping or taping them before you exercise. Again be sure to talk with a medical professional for best practices.
- Drink plenty of water. You should drink before, during, and after exercise.
- Look at the weather. The weather shouldn’t stop you from exercising, however, there are certain exercises that can be dangerous in bad weather. If the weather is going to make it dangerous at all, you should consider exercising indoors instead. You should also be aware of the sun, it can be easy to catch the sun more when exercising so protect your skin with sunscreen. And if you are near water or in the woods, be sure to wear clothing and sprays that will keep mosquitoes, ticks, and other insects away. If you hike into a rock climbing location, be sure to bring bear spray and always let someone know where you are planning to go. It’s better to not go alone but even if you have someone go with you let another trusted person know what the plan is so if they don’t hear from you in a certain amount of time, they can send help.
- Learn the right techniques for the exercise you are doing. If you are a rock climber you know this is imperative.
- Have the right equipment, On of the most common reasons that people fall into injury is from not having the right gear, Make sure your shoes fit properly and any equipment is in good working order. If you are swimming in a lake or ocean for exercise or any other watersport, be sure to wear a swim belt or life vest. You never know when you can get a severe cramp and it is better safe than sorry!
- If you exercise at night use reflective gear. And it is a no-brainer but don’t run on the road or somewhere dangerous especially at night.
