This past weekend was the last hurrah before school started today. To make it a memorable event, we did something out of the ordinary. We visited Pierre Bayou Alligator Farm. That’s right folks! An alligator farm. To be fair, that’s not unusual for Louisiana living but since we just moved here, for us it was out of the ordinary for sure!
There was lots to see in this mini zoo. The alligators were the main attraction but there was a Jungle House with other critters – even rescue raccoons. There was a snow cone hut with a mini pool of juvenile alligators and next to that a place you could pay a little extra to get your photo with a small gator. We got several bags of feed for the emus, raccoons, gators, ducks and geese, goats, deer, miniature horses, turtles, and pygmy goats(my favorites). It was a bit stinky in some parts of it but that’s to be expected with all the different animals plus surrounded by a bayou on one side and a marsh on the other with the twain meeting in the middle of the farm at the alligator island.
I had never really understood the enormity of these reptiles until we went to the feeding show. There was stadium type covered seating and a bayou behind fencing. A “boat” came out from the side with a feeder guy on it and all the sudden what I thought were about 10-15 alligators in the water turned into 27+! It was CREEPY! Yep, I’m never swimming in a bayou now.
The craziest part was watching the creatures jumping up out of the water to eat some chicken hanging at the end of a stick…
Yep, that’s not the biggest critter in the creek. Scary huh?! It was still very entertaining and gave me a wholllleeee lot more respect for these animals. Wondering if there some out of the ordinary day trips near you? Check out Roadside America or Daytrippers for a potential oddity day trip.
