The sun is high in the sky and giving us all great reason to spend a little more time outdoors. However, we should all be aware of the risk that it poses to our skin and what we can do to mitigate that risk. If you’re worried about the sun doing damage to your skin, whether it’s by drying it out, causing breakouts, or exacerbating sensitive skin, then here are a few tips on how you can minimize its effects.
Make sure you have the right kind of protection
Naturally, one of the most important tips to keep in mind is to make sure that you’re getting your daily dose of SPF. Even if you’re only going out in the sun for a relatively short time no matter your complexion, you should make sure that you’re keeping your skin protected. Keep in mind that not all protection is the same. You should ensure you’re playing it cautious with SPF, going as high as 30 if you need to. Plus, make sure you’re going with a lotion that provides both UV-A and UV-B protection – not just one or the other. According to SkinCancer.org 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70. Don’t skimp on the sunblock to help avoid becoming a statistic!
If you do notice any changes to your skin, such as new moles or the appearance of existing moles changing, it’s worth scheduling an appointment with a dermatologist or your physician. That way, you can rule out the possibility of skin cancer.
You can’t always prevent skin damage caused by the sun, but you can always take steps to lessen your risk significantly (like applying sun protection).
Keep your skin hydrated
Heat causes water to evaporate. In the case of the human body, it draws water to the surface in the form of sweat, which our body uses to regulate our temperature. There’s nothing wrong with sweating a little on a hot day, but you have to make sure you’re replacing the moisture you lose, or else you can be more at risk of acne breakouts as well as wrinkling. There are water-drinking apps that can help you measure how much hydration you should be getting, but in addition you can use hydrating skin products, too.
Treating the effects of sun exposure
As mentioned, the sun can cause all manner of little skin issues, including fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven pigmentation. Sun damage can exacerbate the signs of natural aging, making them much more visible than they should be. Techniques like micro needling can help by effectively getting rid of the uppermost layer of skin. Since many of these issues may only affect a layer or two of skin, or might only be visible on those layers, it’s a way to refresh the skin, while also making it look younger and firmer. I’ve actually be checking out micro needling recently for all my sun damage. My skin is getting a bit wrinkly and there are more age spots on my face than teenagers at an epic rave. Do they still have those? LOL Obviously, I’m old and can’t wait to have this done in the next year!
Strengthen your skin
As well as minimizing the effects of the sun on your skin, you can also work to make sure that your skin is strong enough to withstand that damage, too. A lot of the damage the sun does is through oxidative stress, i.e., the breakdown of cells as they try to replicate and repair. As such, eating foods rich in antioxidants, such as blueberries, green tea, and cauliflower can be a great help. Of course, you can also boost the hydration you get throughout the day with foods like watermelon.
If you’re going out to enjoy the summer heat, then be sure to take the sun seriously. Be sure to lather up with sunblock. The damage it can cause can go a lot further than skin-deep!
