It can be very difficult for you to balance your career as well as your overall mental health. As you progress further through your career, you may find that things eventually get worse. You may find that you overthink and that you strive for perfectionism too much. Always remember the fact that nobody is perfect! If you keep the mindset that everything has to be exactly perfect at all times, then you may find that you create even bigger obstacles for yourself in the future and this is when work takes a toll on your mental health.
Talk to Someone
When work takes a toll on your mental health, the first thing that you need to do is talk to someone. You need to open up and tell them what is going on. It may be that your work is putting you under too much pressure or even that you are finding it difficult to deal with everything that you have going on right now. Either way, something needs to change. Make sure that you are seeking the right kind of support and that you are putting your health and well-being first. There are many professional that specialize in helping people with coping with stress at work such as psychologists and career coaches. Create a strategy for managing the stress you face means that you could feel better about your situation as a result.
Have a Breather if you Can
When was the last time you had a day off work? Probably quite some time ago. If you want to help yourself here, then it may be worth taking a day off. When you do, you can give yourself chance to focus on other things or just relax in whatever will calm your mind. You can also gather yourself for the day ahead. If you don’t have any vacation days left, then if you feel comfortable try and explain your situation to your employer to see if they can help.
Don’t Try and Use Unhealthy Coping Mechanisms
Sometimes you may feel as though work is too much and when you get off work, you need to indulge. There is nothing wrong with this except if you are not careful and it ends up becoming a very bad habit. If this is happening to you then read a book instead of reaching for a glass of wine, or even try and have a bath, or call up friend to go see a movie. There are tons of other things to do besides turning to substance abuse to help you cope with stress. If you feel as though you are struggling with alcohol addiction and it’s affecting your relationship, then it’s worth looking into rehab for couples. Some of the best advice here is to do everything in moderation whether it’s the time you devote to work or how much time you spend other ways in your life.
Stop Staying Behind
A lot of people get overwhelmed with work when they work long hours. This is understandable. We all do our best to make sure that you don’t stay behind where possible. The downside is if you are already putting in more than enough hours this is potentially when work takes a toll on your mental health. You may find that you are not able to concentrate as much or that jobs don’t get done as well as they should because you want to have a life outside of work.
If this is happening to you then you need to start letting other people shoulder some of your responsibilities. You should never feel as though you have to do absolutely everything for everyone. Start documenting the projects and work that you are taking care of and the time for each throughout the workday. You might find that the responsibilities that you have been given should actually be split between 2 people instead of just one. Writing down how all of your time is spent throughout the day can help you see what things maybe not even for the job you have been assigned. By documenting this information for a couple weeks you have information you can present to your boss and ask for a solution to the problem. Tread lightly here though you don’t want to see like you are not willing to do work but just help them understand with the information you present that it physically isn’t possible for one person to do everything on the list.
It’s hard to avoid stress and mental health issues at a job requires more than a person can accomplish in a workday. When work takes a toll on your mental health, coping in unhealthy ways is not the answer to relieving stress, but a good option is to speak with someone about these issues. And if it’s just too much, take a mental health sick day to regroup and be better equipped to go back to work the next day.
