I sure know how to have a good time…
Being in my later 40s, I’m starting on the healthcare appointments exponential graph. The X-axis is age and the Y-axis is the number of doctor visits. And the older we get the more visits we seem to need. It almost becomes a social event for some really old folks. I’m not there year but can feel the slope of my graph starting on the upward trend as of late…
Ok, this isn’t completely scientific but it feels like as grandparents and now parents and also myself get older the slope takes a sharp upward movement on the amount of healthcare visits we take.
With that in mind, I’m starting on the fast track for healthcare by getting a colonoscopy. My dad had colon cancer and my cousin has/had colon cancer sooo I guess I’m in the at risk category. And if there is a disease that could happen to someone, I usually hit the Debbie Downer lottery for whatever it is… hernia, back surgery, heart attack, etc. It just seemed like a good idea to go ahead and try to catch anything early that might could be serious in the future.

For this article, I’ll be taking you on my colonoscopy prep rollercoaster ride. This way if you ever have to have this procedure, you can fondly reminiscence laughing at my pain while you too are spending time with your BFF – “John”. Shall we begin?
Yesterday I spoke with the nurse regarding do’s and don’ts for the prep. You doctor’s office might tell you differently so be sure to follow what your physician says. This is just what my doctor’s office told me. I was prescribed Clenpiq. Thankfully the nurse gave me tips which are in the instructions in the box but for some reasons it’s easier to retain information when it is spoken to me. Here’s what I’ve learned – that I am starving.
I’m only suppose to have clear liquids the day before the procedure. So last night I overate in fear of starving to death today. I sense that soon this will be a hindsight is 20/20 kind of thing and I’ll have wished to never have stuffed myself. That is yet to be determined and will be updated on this post later in the day.
Around 12:30 this afternoon, I drank the first of two bottles of laxative (I’m guessing that’s what it is). And have been instructed to drink 5 of 8oz cups of water over the next 5 hours. So far in hour one, I have drank 2 of them. Plus I drank coffee earlier this morning (with NO milk products). I’m surviving on straight up coffee and ice. It was kind of like a meal and tasted pretty good because I’m hungry. Unfortunately, halfway through the coffee I remember that coffee is a diuretic. Hmmm maybe the not the best choice in beverage before the poo floodgates being let open. Again… we’ll see what happens.

I am not sure why I needed to take another bottle of this stuff. For the last 3 of 5 hours, my toilet and I spent more time together today then the last entire year. This morning around 7:30am I checked my weight, surely I’ve lost about 40 pounds. I’m so tired.
Thursday 12.8.2022 around 10 or maybe 11 pm
Ok, so I had no idea how full of poo I am. Hoping that there is nothing left. How can there be anything left. It’s a fluid situation. I’ve been sleeping so much. I’m not allowed to eat anything and only liquids like chicken broth, coffee(oh nooo), coke and sprite and no liquids with pulp or fiber or red/orange/purple color. The last time I ate was last night. Going back to bed.
Friday 12.9.2022 morning
Ok, what in the world. Why does the scale show I only lost 1.4 pounds. My goodness that can’t be all!!! It makes be a bit down about the idea of ever losing weight! sigh. The colonoscopy is at 12:15pm and time to go.

So I survived. It wasn’t as terrible as I thought it would be. I was a bit hangry on Friday before the appointment. But everyone working there was nice and even laughed at one of my potty jokes. Couldn’t resist. It only took about 20 minutes and thankfully got a clean bill of health. Not even polyps.
TIPS:
#1 I’m all for preventative medicine. Check your family medical history and discuss with your doctor about your concerns. Because of my family’s history, my doctor thought it would be a good idea to get screened. One of my family member’s went in for a colonoscopy and they ended up removing polyps which can advance to cancer.
#2 When you prepping for a coloscopy be sure to drink LOTS of water. At least that’s what my doctor said to do. I think I drank 16 cups of water in 24 hours. I’m not sure if that’s too much for a person so be sure to check with your doctor.
#3 Make sure you have plenty, and I mean PLENTY, of toilet paper in your bathroom. You’re going to need it!
#4 Wipe gently. Not.A.Joke! Be sure to not get too aggressive with wiping. It can be a little painful after the 10th+ visit to the potty.
#5 Take a day off from work the day of and the day before your colonoscopy. I don’t know how a person would be able to prep for a colonoscopy while being at work.
#6 Make a list of medicine you are currently taking to give to the doctor and/or anesthesiologist. It might affect the way your body reacts to the anesthesia. And be sure to mention any other health issues that could cause problems.
These are just a couple ideas that could be helpful if you are going to have to have a colonoscopy. It’s a stinky business but thankfully it can help to rule out cancer. Be sure to ask your doctor for any tips and all the steps you’ll need to follow for the prep and colonoscopy. I truly help that everything works out in the end for your colonoscopy!!! LOL
