Burnout happens when you work too hard for too long, and all that stress takes over your mind. It can impact your sleep and immune system as well as being disastrous for your mental health. When work takes over your life, it’s also harder to maintain a healthy lifestyle. You need to eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly, spend time with family and friends, and give your mind a rest, but when you’re constantly busy it’s easy to fall into bad habits.
You may think all this stress is out of your hands. After all, you chose your career and might have knew it was going to be a tough ride from the outset. But if this isn’t true, you are ultimately in charge of decisions in your life and can change whether that be your career or how you live and work day to day. Many hardworking professionals find ways to balance their personal and professional lives without succumbing to the negative consequences of stress and overwork.
To help you cope a little better with your to-do list, here are four pieces of advice to help you handle it when work gets too much.
If you feel you have too much to do, don’t be afraid to say something about it. It could be that you’re so good at putting on a brave face that your boss doesn’t realize how stretched you’ve become. Speak to your employer about how you’re feeling and ask if there’s anything they can do to help you reduce your workload or give you tools that can help maximize your time. More than likely you need to make some adjustments to either your perception of your responsibilities or your need to take on more than you actually have because you are trying to please other people or to feel like you are more important than you really are. When your colleagues come to you for help with a task that’s not strictly in your job description, you might be the kind of person who can’t bring yourself to say no. Sometimes, you need to put your foot down and tell them as nicely as possible that you haven’t got room for this in your schedule right now. There’s a limit to how much you can take on. Be firm with your priorities or people will end up taking advantage of your good nature.
Ask for help
If you find yourself spinning plates by trying to do too many things at once, why not lighten the load by asking someone for help? At worst, they will say no, and nothing will have changed. But at best, they will free you up to focus on the tasks that really need your attention.
Learn to switch off
You need downtime in your life to help you relax and recharge. If you are working into the evening and answering emails on a Sunday afternoon, you will never leave work mode. Establish clear boundaries between your personal and professional lives to give yourself some much-need escape. As soon as you have completed your daily tasks, shut your laptop, switch your phone off and take some time for yourself. Decide now what times and days are for work and what times and days are for anything but work. Otherwise, you might start a project and keep telling yourself that you will just work for one more hour until midnight rolls around and you still haven’t even made time to let your mind and body relax for the day.
While having work to do is a blessing, don’t let it turn into a curse by letting it take over your life 24/7. Your responsibilities to the job you have committed to is important but so is the commitment to good health, family and friends, and enjoying life. Be sure to balance your time each day because it is the most important commodity in life.
