While it’s important to have a job that allows you to pay the bills and live the life that you want, it’s important that you consider other factors when it comes to choosing a career, too. While a steady paycheck will make you happy for a while, at some point or another, you may begin to feel dissatisfied. That’s because the only reason you’ll be doing your job is for the money; there’ll be nothing else to enjoy. If you’re going to spend forty plus hours doing something, then you should make sure you enjoy it. It should be satisfying.
But how do you find careers that make a difference in the world and that will be satisfying for you? One method is to choose one that makes a difference in the world. We take a look at some examples of these careers below.
Working With Children
The children are the future. It’s a cliche, but only because it’s true. If there’s a population of well-educated, pleasant people, then society would look and work much better, right? By working with children, you’ll have tremendous influence to guide them in the right direction. The most common method is to become a teacher, but there are other ways to work with kids, too, such as a child counselor.
Caring For Others
Studies have shown that caring for others is one of the most satisfying things that a person can do. For reasons that we don’t (and likely never will) understand, it brings us deep happiness that is difficult to replicate via other means. If you’re a naturally caring person, then consider working in this field. There are many different career options available, but perhaps the one that’s most needed is care for the elderly. Read this list for an elderly caretaker checklist and see if it’s something that you may be interested in. Perhaps the best way to make a difference in the world is to make a difference in someone’s life, and this is one of the best methods for doing that.
Fighting For People’s Rights
While there’s a lot to love about living in the modern world, there’s no denying that there are problems. It’s an unequal and unfair world, for instance. If things are going to change, then educated and passionate people need to step up and make things happen. If you want to find some careers that make a differece while also working in a professional industry, then you could look at becoming a lawyer or a legal assistant, and then work in an important field — for example, you could work in climate change, against corruption, migrant law, or freedom of speech to name a few.
Mental and Physical Well-being
Another way that you can help people is by helping them to become the best version of themselves. All humans have the capacity to be the best version of themselves, but not everyone has the keys they need. If you love to see people improve themselves, then consider working to help people in a mental or physical capacity. You’ll gain a lot of satisfaction from knowing that you’ve helped people overcome things that were holding them back. This can be a career in the medical field, health and fitness, life coaching, and more.
These are just some career ideas for helping to make a difference in the world. But don’t forget that there are many more ways to make a difference in the world in any job that you have. I can’t tell you how many times someone just being nice to me has helped me want to continue on in life when I’ve gone through the drive thru or picked up a prescription or just checking out at the grocery store. Being kind and thinking of others while in any job can change the world for the people you interact with. Which reminds me of the starfish story.
(If you are the originator of this story, please let me know and I’ll link it back to you.) I bet you’ve heard of the starfish story but just in case, here’s a condensed version… One day a guy was walking along a beach where hundreds of starfish had washed up on shore. Every couple steps he would bend down, pick up and starfish and throw it as far as he could back into the ocean. A guy walking toward him says, “Hey, why are you bothering doing that? You can’t save them all. It doesn’t matter.” The starfish saver replied, “It mattered to this one!” So if you have a job that isn’t some international save the world place and you don’t think it’s one of the careers that makes a difference and feel like, what’s the point? Remember that there are starfish right in front of you that just need someone to be kind to them.
