Getting sober isn’t easy, especially if drinking alcohol is all you know. Understanding reasons to quit drinking alcohol and the benefits of this lifestyle change might keep you motivated to stay on the right track. I know it’s hard to quit drinking because I did it. In my late teens and throughout my 20s, I was probably drunk at the very least 30% of time. There was a stretch where I was drinking myself to sleep and going to work a bit tipsy the next morning. My tipping point was the night I was hanging out with a friend who only drank wine coolers. By the end of the night she had drank 3-4 wine coolers and all the rest of the alcohol and beer that was empty was what I drank. The coffee table was full of bottles and I drank more than 80% of what was there and only felt slightly buzzed. Somehow this was the tipping point that made me realize I had a problem. Why that was the tipping point makes no sense considering I drank myself to sleep lots of times or once I drunkenly called my coworkers names when we all went out for pizza one night or while in college I found myself waking up in the back of cars after I had gone out getting drunk and there are so many more sad and pathetic stories I can remember (or can kind of remember).

Hopefully, you are not an addict but even so there are some really good reasons to quit drinking. You’ll have more clarity when you’re sober and likely the motivation to want to meet and exceed your goals. If you’re always hungover, then you risk being too tired or sick to do anything productive. You’ll Sleep Better
One reason to quit drinking alcohol is that you’ll sleep better each night. Alcohol may cause you to wake up in the middle of the night, or you might stay up late drinking and, in turn, sleep in later in the morning. Sleep is essential to you functioning optimally each day and feeling your best. Without quality sleep, you risk becoming moody and making mistakes in the workplace.
A More Beautiful Face & Smile
You’ll have better skin and a more beautiful face and smile when you quit drinking alcohol. When you do stop, you may notice your teeth aren’t in great condition. If this is the case, find the best dental care around to fix any issues and improve your teeth and smile. If you drink a lot, you may get more cavities, your skin might be dry, and you’ll likely have bags under your eyes each morning.
You’ll Have Better Workouts
When you stop drinking alcohol, you’re going to find you have more natural energy. More energy equates to better workouts and better results. You’ll likely be able to drop any access weight, and your clothes will fit nicely. You’ll reap the full health and brain benefits of working out instead of muddling your mind with alcohol afterward. You can work out any time of the day and won’t skip out on it because you want to drink.
More Money in Your Pocket
Drinking alcohol is an expensive habit and will take a toll on your finances over time. Quit drinking alcohol to save yourself money and put more of it back in your pocket. You can use your money for other necessities or save it up and buy yourself a nice gift. You won’t have to worry about putting aside money from your paycheck to maintain your habit or worry about how you’ll save up enough to buy more.
Improved Relationships
Another reason to quit drinking alcohol is to improve your relationships. They may be suffering without you even knowing it because you’re always intoxicated. Once you get out of your fog, you can enhance and strengthen the relationships with the people you love the most and are close to you. After you stop drinking, it’s wise to begin to mend any damaged relationships and give out any necessary apologies that should be made. There will likely be an immediate and positive change in your personality when you stop drinking.
When you are a drunk, you might not even know it. I didn’t. Check basic things in your life like how much money are you spending per week on alcohol? Are you drinking yourself to sleep each night? Do people in your life mention your excessive drinking? Then stop. It’s not easy. Seek help from organizations such as Alcoholics Anonymous and local churches. Pray. And pray some more.
