With the New Year shining ahead like a bright beacon of hope, you’re surely preparing your New Years’ Resolutions. Like so many others, you probably wish to make changes to your body. With the stress of 2020 soon to be in your rearview mirror, consider taking up a new lifestyle hobby with yoga. You’ll reap both physical and mental health benefits on your new path to well-being.
When beginning any new exercise plan, be sure to consult with a medical provider as appropriate. After that has been taken care of, should you be a novice in the yoga realm, you may wonder where to begin. Rest assured, there are so many resources to guide you along the way.
The first step is learning how to start yoga. There are a multitude of ways to begin, but the best way is to take a deep breath, put on some comfortable and moveable clothing, and relax. You’ll find some great tips on how to get into a variety of yoga postures here. Take this opportunity to challenge yourself and put down any negativity or apprehension you may feel inside. Tell yourself, “I can do this.” Keep trying. With each session, you’ll become more confident in your body’s abilities and strength. You’ll understand the positioning techniques and will definitely feel better for trying. Take it one yoga pose at a time and as you perfect these keep moving. I’ve tried yoga before and it’s not easy! You would think just holding a pose would be no big deal but try out the plank for more than a minute and I’m sweating like a waterhose! LOL Don’t give up! You can get in shape, tone muscles, and improve your health with this exercise that doesn’t take up much space and can be a peaceful time in your day.
Another goal for 2021 should be meditation. With all of the stress of the previous year (and there has been a lot), meditation can help bring calm to an overstimulated mind. Luckily, yoga goes hand in hand with meditation. If you’re short on time, you can multitask and use the time for yoga in tandem with meditation. Turn off any extraneous noise, turn on calming and soothing sounds or music. Some people may find the sounds of nature to be grounding. Others might prefer a guided meditation soundtrack. Regardless of what you choose, make the space calm and comfortable for you.

Mindfulness goes along with meditation. With mindfulness, you pay attention to where you are at that moment. You are physically present, of course, but your mind needs to stay in that space during mindful meditation practice. And it does take practice. When your mind is racing with the thought of lists, what to cook for dinner, and whether you’ll finally get to visit your family members soon, you’ll need to practice focusing your mind to be in a place of calm. Just think about breathing and sitting and relaxing.
There are many benefits of mindfulness and meditation in addition to yoga. Mindfulness and meditation are beneficial for stress relief, assisting in focus on daily activities, and as sleep aids in the form of relaxation. Practicing these three things can bring about awareness and appreciation for what you have in life right now, not on what you’re missing out on due to restrictions and lockdowns.
Give yoga, prayer, and mindfulness a healthy try. Turn off whatever streaming service you happen to be using at present and get into the moment with a new goal for the New Year. Stick with them and make them a new habit. You’ll thank yourself. Next, it’s time to sit back, relax some more with your favorite shows. After all, relaxation comes in many forms!
