While individual circumstances might affect which time in your life was your own most stressful experience, we can’t deny that we’re living through maybe what is the most stressful period in living memory. Personal and political differences have reached a boiling point, civic unrest is making a lot of us more concerned about the future and, of course, there’s a pandemic-sized cherry on top. Due to that last one, a lot of us have lost the coping mechanisms that helped us deal with stress in the past. Get up and get active
It might be old and tired advice by now, but it’s true. Exercise does both your mind and body a lot of good. This is in part thanks to the release of neurotransmitters like dopamine and endorphins that can make your mood much more positive. However, having health and body goals and working to reach them can also make it feel like your time spent in lock down isn’t wasted, but rather used in a different way that your everyday life. You don’t have to have a gym membership to work on yourself. There are plenty of exercise videos on YouTube you can get started with. Or if you do love a certain sport like rock climbing you can opt to join an indoor climbing gym or join an exercise group for your favorite way to get up and get moving.
Work towards something
As mentioned, having goals, having something to work towards, can help you feel like your time is being much better used. It also provides a great distraction from the woes of the world outside at the moment. Hobbies are a great coping mechanism, and the hobbies that focus on self-development and improvement, such as arts and crafts, can feel even more worthwhile. However, it’s important to recognize that self-care for self-care’s sake is important. There doesn’t always have to be additional practicality attached to it.
Take the time to relax
Though it might seem like we all have a lot more time on our hands, how many of us actually set aside some time in the day towards active relaxation. This is a great coping mechanism. There are different ways to do it. It might involve giving yourself a home spa treatment. It might involve some app-guided meditation. It might involve a little herbal help like 805 Beach Breaks. Make sure that relaxation is part of your daily routine, and that you’re not skipping your self-care.
Activate that imagination
A lot of us have turned to binging Netflix and Hulu shows and, while that might have been effective for a while, it can start to lose its appeal after a while. However, by turning to a different medium, you can reach parts of your imagination that have long been left dormant. For instance, you can join an online book club like those shown at Scribendi or simply take the opportunity to read a little more each day. Few things are better for your mental health.
