Aromatherapy has been used for centuries. Researchers are increasingly coming to believe that what we smell is just as important as what we eat. So sales of concentrated plant essences are going through the roof. Note that “essential oils” is plural – meaning that there are a lot of them. They all convey unique, health-promoting effects. Go to any vendor’s website, and you’ll see literally hundreds of options, usually labeled with a number. It turns out that you can extract oil from practically any plant species, distill it into a vial, and get something that offers real benefits.
I have not used essential oils just yet but do love certain scents like lemon balm. It just makes me happy. I have an overgrown amount of lemon balm in my garden and would love to extract the oil and just wear a bracelet with it infused in it.
According to John Hopkins Medicine, the safest ways to use essential oils include:
- “Aromatherapy accessories: Necklaces, bracelets and keychains made with absorbent materials you apply essential oils to and sniff throughout the day.”
- “Body oil: A mixture of essential oils with a carrier oil such as olive, jojoba or coconut oil that can be massaged into skin. Because essential oils are concentrated, they can cause irritation. Avoid using them full-strength on skin.”
- “Aroma stick: Also called an essential oil inhaler, these portable plastic sticks have an absorbent wick that soaks up essential oil. They come with a cover to keep the scent under wraps until you’re ready.”
So why do people love essential oils?
They Let You Fragrance Your Home, Toxin-Free
Essential oils are wholly natural products that come from plants like frankincense, lavender, and chamomile. Therefore, the scents they produce are no different, in principle, from those you generate when you cook. In fact, they’re probably better for you since they come exclusively from plants and not synthetically produced chemicals. Essential oils, therefore, are an alternative for commercially-produced scented products. While most oils are natural, the vast majority of commercial products use synthetic ingredients, many of which haven’t been adequately tested on people.
They Offer Health Benefits
Researchers are increasingly coming to believe that essential oils offer tangible health benefits for those who use them. The evidence suggests that scents like lavender and frankincense can reduce anxiety and depression and elevate mood, just like the best CBD oil online. Furthermore, sniffing rosemary may actually improve cognitive performance, making it easier to solve problems and write reports.
They’re Great For Self-Care And Well-being
This point is related to the last: essential oils are excellent for self-care and generally looking after yourself. Once you pop them in your diffuser and allow them to make their way around the room, they create a beautiful atmosphere that changes your rooms’ character. Again, you’re not relying on artificial fragrances. Instead, you’re producing smells that actively help to support your mood and make you feel better. You can also put some essential oils directly on your skin to waft up to your nose while you work (or negotiate with clients on the phone). And, again, this can help you feel a lot better, taking away some of the angst you might feel.
They’re Great For Sleep
Most people don’t know about this, but essential oils are excellent for sleep. It turns out that specific smells trigger our autonomous nervous system, activating our biological sleep routine. So if you’re used to smelling rosemary before you go to bed, it can actually help shut down your brain and prepare you for rest. Try placing scent sticks or a diffuser in your bedroom and set it to start working an hour before you go to bed. Once the time comes to hit the sack, there’s already enough scent in the air to prime you for sleep and make drifting off easier.
