We are well into 2020, and for some of us, the start of a new year has left us wanting to find a way to give ourselves a little something that we may feel we have been missing. While some may think it to close to vanity, the truth is, changing who we are on the outside from time to time can help us boost our self-esteem. In this post, we are going to be looking at reinvention and what it can for us. Then we are going to look at a few things you may want to consider when setting about your journey to give yourself a new look.

Why Reinvention?
There are some people out there that may be thinking that reinvention may be quite drastic. It can be. If you want something that can give you a new lease on life, why not try it out? The first thing you should remember about changing your image is that nothing about who you are on the inside has to change in a negative way. Most people think that when it comes to reinvention, you attempt to change who you are at your core. While changing your look may increase your happiness and give you a little confidence, the biggest change is that you just feel a lot better when you look in the mirror. When we feel better, there is something that ripples through your life and leaves you feeling brand new. It can have such a positive impact on your emotional well-being and on your health as well.
The Clothing
The first thing we are going to look at is the obvious one. If you want to change your look, then the chances are that you will need to start shopping. What is the best place to start shopping? Your own closet! Recently, I took out all of my clothes from my closet and dresser. There was a ridiculous amount of clothes. Some I had forgotten about; some that were worn out and stained. Some that just looked terrible on me but for some weird reason I was keeping. The donation was 4 garbage bags full of things that didn’t “spark joy” (ala Marie Kondo). Not only did these things not spark joy when I put them on, they also didn’t spark joy when I had to wade through everything to find something I actually liked.
Shop through the clothes you presently have and only keep the bare minimum so it will force you to choose outfits that really make you feel good! Now, while you have a few outfit ideas that you think will go with your new look, you should be mindful to only buy things that you feel great in. While some things may match your look, if you do not feel right in them, avoid them. The most important thing you need to remember about any clothes you buy is that they will not only highlight your new look, they are also there to make you feel brand new and fabulous.
The Little Things
When it comes to reinventing your look, another thing you will want to look at is the little details. More often than not, in any given situation, changing the little things can often help you start on your way to finding your new image. Maybe, to begin with, you can start to look at something like your hair. A sure-fire way to give yourself an overhaul is to change your hair style or color. When the time comes to change your hair, you don’t have to go all out. By just having something a little different to usual, you will see a lot of difference in yourself. When I first started getting gray hairs, I started coloring it. Not just once. I colored my hair a different hue once every 8-12 weeks. I had a blast with it! Plus, it spiced up our marriage coming home with a different look every couple months. It’s not a huge thing to get this done or stick with at home coloring. This little thing made me feel beautiful and was an all-new experience for my looks after 33+ years.
Coloring your hair is just one little thing you can do to reinvent your look. Other ideas could be your nails done occasionally, having your legs waxed, treating yourself to a visit to an aesthetician, or even updating your favorite tennis shoes. There are so many ways you can reinvent your look that aren’t drastic but can help to make you feel more confident.
Remember Who You Are
While you are looking at the details, you may even want to look at some new jewelry, if you are one for piercings places like piercing mania have an incredible selection that can really help you finish off your new look. If you know me IRL, you know about my 6 ear piercings I had done in one night about 2 years ago. I had wanted to do this since high school(25+ years ago). I still would like to have an eyebrow piercing but it might give my sweet parents a heart attack and I don’t want to be responsible for that! Plus, I was looking for an engineering position at that time and sometimes facial piercings are not ideal for some companies. Six piercings in one sitting isn’t really a little thing but kinda is. I don’t feel like I completely reinvented my mom-ness self but more like found a piece of myself that I had buried for years under other people’s expectations.
At 44+ years old, I’m starting to remember who I am and feeling brave enough to be myself.
I’m not really reinventing myself on the inside at all but more like revealing what had been suppressed for too many years. I still am Cindy at the core but am excited to express myself with my outward appearance without fear. It feels good! So go ahead and jump in feet first to reinventing yourself with a new look if it is something you know you have been wanting to do! This is your body and, guess what, you get to dictate what you want to do with it. This might be the change you’ve been wanting to do and it might just help your self-esteem in a great way!
