However, modern technology doesn’t just bring health benefits along with it – there are some downsides as well. When you’re living with a lot of tech in your house, there’s a chance you’re being affected by a few! Being mindful of these can help you to continue to enjoy tech in your home while still keeping a healthy perspective toward it.
Disrupting Your Sleep
The number one issue technology in the home causes is a disruption to a healthy sleep schedule. The more time you spend on the PC or the phone at night is less time you have to dedicate to getting a good night’s rest, and that’ll make you cranky at the very least.
Being tired can cause eye strain and muscle issues. It can cause tiredness throughout the day and could very well tank your moods and your diet too. Turn off your phone, computer and TV at least 1 hour before you plan to go to sleep. Getting away from the blue light could help you get better sleep which could improve your help.
Causing Muscle Issues
How often do you feel your neck straining when you’re sitting at a desk? How often do you have to stretch or massage parts of your shoulders after a long day tapping away? How often does your head or muscles around your eyes ache after being on your phone in bed? That’s right, technology usage could be the cause of all of these problems!
Thankfully, it’s a simple fix – all you need to do is check your posture whenever you’re sitting in front of your PC or laying with your phone out. Make sure you’re relaxed, and sitting up straight to stop any cricks in the neck forming. And make sure to change position every now and then too!
Straining Your Eyes
Technology can do a lot to our eyes, simply because we’re looking at screens all day. The more time you spend staring at a screen, the more harm it could do to your eyes and the muscles surrounding them. This could even have negative effects on your brain from time to time. Who has gotten headaches after being on the computer for too long? Yep, me too!
So what do you do? How do you cut back on the eye strain, despite needing to use your phone and computer so often throughout the day? You give yourself a break every now and then – every 20 minutes you look at a screen, look at something in the distance for 20 seconds. This doesn’t take much time but could help give your eyes and mind a break.
Similarly, make sure you’re not spending too much time on your phone in the dark. This could strain your eyes due to the light exposure. It also can make night blindness a lot worse, and it’s not good for your sleep schedule either, as we noted above!
Exposure to EMF Waves
Now, this is something a lot of people don’t talk about, but EMF is something that could do a bit of damage over the long term. Plus, the more EMF in your home, the worst these issues could potentially be. However, before you worry too much, it’s important to note that EMF comes from both natural and manmade sources, but if you have a lot of tech in your home, your home’s EMF levels could potentially be dangerous.
And that’s something you might want to focus a little more on in day to day life, simply because your devices are sending out low level radiation waves. Of course, these don’t have to be a big worry. If you’re always on your phone, or using a computer for more than three or four hours a day, you might want to invest in an EMF meter to check how many waves exist in your immediate surroundings.
Another idea is investing in protective elements like EMF protection clothing. If you’re used to the conveniences of modern tech but are still concerned about the amount of EMF in your home, do some further research regarding low and high level radiation waves here. All in all, EMF isn’t usually a worry, but some recent studies have shown links between them and cancer although more studies need to be conducted.
There are many ways having technology in home can positively or negatively affect your health. Be cognitive of how long you are on devices and shut them down well before bedtime. Also use good posture and take care of your eyes and body. Technology can be a blessing if we remember to use this in moderation!
