Sal’s Downtown – The hidden gem of an Italian restaurant in Lake City, Florida.
Sal’s Downtown a restaurant bar plus pizza and pasta joint in Lake City, Florida. On late Sunday night during our epic road trip in January 2020, there wasn’t much of a crowd on the restaurant side since it was just about kitchen closing time but there were plenty of people watching sports on the mainly bar side of the venue. We managed to get our order in before the kitchen closed so glad they kept the fire going for just a couple more minutes for us which was so nice of them! And thank goodness because we were all hungry from our big drive from Northwest Louisiana to Vicksburg National Military Park and then after eating we were traveling on to Pensacola for our first overnight stop on the way to central Florida.
The dishes we tried were the manicotti, spaghetti, and pizza. Quintessential Italian food and delicious! Their flatbread pizzas are the real deal and cooked in a pizza oven. It was big enough two adults or our three kids could have split it.
The waitress was on top of things the whole time… Our drinks stayed full and we had all we needed (aka plenty of napkins). It was a clean place and the bathrooms were kept up. Plus, I liked that the pizza oven was in full view on the restaurant side which for me added to the authenticity of the dishes.
There are plenty of other plates they offer. Here’s some of the Italian list that I grabbed off of SliceOfLife.com (Yep, you guessed it that’s a website for pizzerias. lol) Muscles mariana or bianca, calamari, fried mozzarella, garlic knots and more are on the menu for appetizers. For entrees there is anything from Philly cheesesteaks to hot Italian subs to chicken Florentine to eggplant parmigiana. There are also seafood dishes, pasta dishes, baked dishes, gourmet pizzas, and Sal’s specialty dishes.
To me, this is how you know it’s a good Italian place … There are so many choices on Sal’s Downtown menu. This is just like Italian’s (my grandfather’s family). They were all about showing love through an overabundance of food! I can still hear my grandma’s voice, “Eat, eat. You’re too skinny.” If only she could see me now. LOL
If you find yourself on I-10 passing by the Lake City, Florida exit, I recommend this roadside eatery for a good hour stop to stretch your legs and fill your belly. Bon Appetite!
