One of the keys to a productive and calm day is a productive and calm morning. In theory, it sounds pretty straightforward, doesn’t it… Get up, have a lovely, refreshing shower, a leisurely breakfast and a cup of coffee and a peruse of the morning papers before getting everyone out the door, calmly and on time.

Bwahahaha. I got ya with that one! We all know that this is almost never the reality. I remember a friend telling me to add 15 minutes to your departure time with each new child you have. She was sooo on the money with that advice. Although, now that the kids can get their own shoes on and get in the car etc, we have scaled back the 45 minutes to get everyone and everything in the car down to about 15 minutes (not including them figuring out where their shoes are and bathroom breaks before leaving the house). The morning rush is always coocoo at our house but there are ways to make it easier and quicker.
Here are tips to help you organize your morning routine a little better.

Make sure you get enough sleep
It is much easier to get your morning routine nailed if you are fresh and energized when you wake up in the morning. It is recommended to get seven to eight hours of sleep on a night. Set yourself a regular bedtime – and stick to it. Avoid looking at screens for at least an hour before bed and try not to drink too much caffeine. With electronics permeating every aspect of our lives, it is hard to put down your phone at night but it could be making you entire life harder than you realize by disrupting your sleep routine.
Make your bed
It is such a simple task, one that should only take a minute, but it can really make the difference between feeling organized and not. It also eliminates the temptation to climb back into it and makes the room look much tidier. An organized environment can help positively impact your mental well-being.

Spend some time on yourself first
You have heard this saying on my blog over and over my mama taught me but remember… “If you don’t take care of yourself, how can you take care of others?” I don’t mean this in a selfish way but get yourself ready in the morning by taking care of your well-being such as prayer, have a shower, exercise, do your hair, makeup or whatever else you do to make yourself feel human in the mornings. Grab your Nespresso compatible espresso capsules and head to the yard or porch for your morning coffee in peace. Mmmm coffee! Once you have got yourself sorted and ready for the day ahead, you will find it much easier to get everyone else ready.
Have everything in one place
One of the most time-consuming things that happen in the morning is searching for items that are not in the right place. It might be your lipstick, or your cell phone, or your keys, or that library book that needs to be returned that day. Have a basket by the front door, or at least somewhere that you pass by to get to the front door where you leave everything that you need for that day. Get into the habit of putting things there, so you can always grab them. You can even make sure to have your outfit selected the night before.
Don’t be distracted by screens
Many of us sit down to have a quick mooch through social media while we have our coffee or breakfast, and before we know it, it is time to leave the house and we have not done everything that we needed to do. I’m so guilty of this. I have to force myself to ONLY turn off my phone alarm in the morning and not get sucked into the social media time continuum vortex. Try to avoid picking up your cell phone until you are absolutely sure you have done everything you need to.
Be consistent and stick to it
Whatever you do in the morning, if it works, keep to it. When your morning runs smoothly, the rest of your day is much more likely to go smoothly. If you are a magician, things going smoothly is easy peasy. If you are a busy adult that has 2 zillion things going on at all times, being consistent is easier said than done. Just having a pseudo to do list in your mind each morning can better organize your morning routine. Eventually, it will be second nature if you can try to follow the same steps each day when getting ready in the morning. Plus, there seems to be comfort in the daily routines of life.
