Watching TV for prolonged hours, spending a vast amount of time behind your phones or computer screens, and so many other challenges are what many people face today to maintain good vision and healthy eyes. They are essential throughout life as they help you explore and enjoy the world around you. By capturing light, the ocular system connects and works with neurons that translate and deliver messages to the brain in visual images – and we see! This is why it’s crucial to take necessary precautions to ensure that your optical system still functions as it should.
Here are some simple ways you can help maintain good vision and healthy eyes.
Wear protective eyewear
If you work in a hazardous environment – such as a construction site or a manufacturing plant, it is essential to wear your prescribed protective eyewear. Every time I build anything and need to work with wood or other materials I wear safety glasses. These safety glasses or protective goggles help protect your eyes from injuries. This also applies to sports such as lacrosse or ice hockey, where you are susceptible to eye injuries. Helmets with protective goggles with polycarbonate lenses are an excellent choice to protect your eyes while you play. Even when kids are playing Nerf battles protective eyewear is important to remember.
Protect your eyes from the sun
The sun’s rays contain an amount of ultraviolet (UV) rays. Although a relatively small amount of exposure to these rays would not harm you, frequent exposure can affect your eye health. Also, due to various medications, your eyes may become sensitive. Regular exposure to the sun can increase your risk of cataracts, muscular degeneration, solar retinitis, corneal dystrophies, and other eye diseases. A pair of sunglasses are all you need to protect your eyes while you enjoy the sun. You can select from a wide range of sunglasses that block 99-100% of UVB and UVA rays in eyeglasses stores.
Visit your eye specialist regularly
Regular visits to an eye specialist are a great way to maintain good vision and healthy eyes. The eye specialist is equipped with sufficient knowledge and skills to provide the visual care you need. They conduct eye exams to detect various eye problems and other diseases such as glaucoma, which has no apparent symptoms. The type of eye specialist you would need depends on your eye care needs. An ophthalmologist provides general eye care, treats diseases, and performs surgery. An optometrist also provides general care and treats some eye diseases but does not perform surgery.
Eat a healthy diet
It is almost impossible to talk about health and not mention your diet! What you eat can go a long way in determining how when your ocular system operates. Your meals must include several fruits and vegetables, especially leafy green ones such as kale and spinach. Foods containing Omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon and tuna; zinc, lutein, and Vitamin E also ward off deteriorating eye health problems such as cataracts.
Maintaining good eyesight and eye health is essential to living a comfortable life. By following the tips mentioned, you and your family can help yourselves maintain good vision and healthy eyes.
