Not everyone looks forward to aging, but it beats the alternative, right?! People aren’t too excited about aging for many reasons such as worrying that certain things could happen as we get older. Specific conditions like loss of sight or hearing are some of the more likely areas that people worry about. If you’re in this position, then you mightn’t need to worry as much as you think.
Some of the conditions that you expect to develop might not be as common as you’d think. While that could be a positive thing, it doesn’t mean that there aren’t things to worry about. Instead, a few things will be more common than many people expect. The good news is that they can be relatively easy to manage. But it’s always good to prepare yourself mentally for what might be something you face or an aging parent faces.
Common Conditions To Expect As You Get Older
Mental health is something that everyone needs to look after. That becomes increasingly obvious as you get older and doesn’t stop when you retire. According to some reports, over 15 percent of people over 60 suffer from some mental health issue. According to HopkinsMedicine.org , “An estimated 26% of Americans ages 18 and older — about 1 in 4 adults — suffers from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year. “
That includes depression, among multiple other conditions. These conditions could be underreported, however. Managing any condition that may cause depression, alongside living an active and healthy lifestyle, could help reduce this quite significantly. Being as social as possible will also be a way to prevent this or minimize its symptoms.
Many people don’t think of their balance until it starts being a problem. As you get older, you could notice more and more issues with it. That could be related to multiple things, with health conditions being the most notable. Infections, especially in your ear, can be a prime cause of this. Be sure to speak with your doctor if you are having balance problems or any physical or mental health issues.
In other cases, it can be because of physical injuries or impairments. In that case, you may need to look at the link between balance and vestibular therapy. That could help you minimize, if not overcome, the problems.
You wouldn’t expect malnutrition being a problem when you get older, although it’s surprisingly common. It’s often underdiagnosed, however, especially with people over the age of 65. Some people as they get advanced in age like 80s, they can literally forget to eat or have a loss of appetite causing malnutrition. That can lead to multiple other issues, such as joint and muscle problems.
It’s also possible that malnutrition is caused by another health issue. Some of the more notable of these include depression, dementia, and similar conditions. Thankfully, malnutrition is relatively easy to treat and prevent.
Having a balanced diet is the best way of doing so. Fruits and vegetables will be some of the best parts of a healthy meal. You could also take advantage of food services if cooking is an issue. Be sure to speak with your doctor or pharmacists to make sure the food you eat or beverages you drink won’t interfere with your medications or any health issues.
Few people want to get older as they’re afraid of the many negative things that are associated with it and obviously the inevitable. Medical advancements are coming quite quickly, however. As a result, many age-related conditions are becoming less and less impactful. You shouldn’t have as much to worry about as you’d think. Naturally, you’ll need to take preventative measures for much of this such as seeing your doctor regularly.
