Many many moons ago, my husband and I backpacked through Greece. It was an amazing adventure seeing Athens and the islands Paros, Santorini, and Milos, and then back to Athens for 2 more nights. There was so much history to soak in, so many nice people, beautiful scenery, and so much more. But one thing that really stuck with me was the food!
The official Greek salad was my favorite of all while we were on vaca… tomatoes, onions, bell peppers, black olives, an olive oil dressing, and the feta cheese(sooo good). But all the food was delicious. So last night I got a craving for the homeland…. errr, I mean Greek food. So my oldest son and I stopped by Yeero!! Yeero!! after his violin lessons.
They did not disappoint!
Yeero Yeero is one of my fav restaurants in Shreveport, Louisiana. Luckily, this is an authentic restaurant founded by 1st generation Greek immigrants. Their food is delicious!
Last night our order covered a myriad of dishes…
Lemon Chicken Veggie Soup
“From the gods” Shrimp kabob sandwich
The Greek Sampler which included the following
Small Greek salad, gyro meat with pita wedges, moussake, pastichio, Tzatziki, and spanakopita
and for our youngest chicken tenders (bc he is still young enough that he’s not so sure about trying new things lol)
Now I bet you are wondering, “What in the world are some of those things and how do you pronounce these words?” Ok, let’s start with the Lemon Chicken Veggie Soup which is a creamery version of how I make chicken noodle soup also with less noodles and splash of lemon juice. Two of our kids both ate a bowl each! whew!

The shrimp kabob sandwich was a gyro (“yeero”) with shrimp. It of course was DELICIOUS! I ate half of it and didn’t manage to get a good pic of it. Trust me, it was so good! If the other half is still in the fridge when I get home tonight, I’ll be eating that!
Ok, now on to the Greek Sampler:
The small “Greek” salad wasn’t like the salads we ate in Athens or the islands because it was mostly lettuce. I don’t remember any salad in Greece having lettuce. But it did have plenty of feta sooo this girl can’t complain. My daughter took that with her for lunch.
She also took the pita and gyro meat with her as well. According to Wikipedia: In Greece, gyros is normally made with pork, though other meats are used in other countries. Chicken is common, and lamb or beef may be found more rarely. Typical American mass-produced gyros are made with finely ground beef mixed with lamb. Whatever meat is used isn’t as important to my palate as is the spices and how the meat is roasted on this vertical rotisserie thing loaded with thinly sliced meat and topped off with a layer of fat. My goodness it is delicious!
So what in the world is moussaka? TheSpruceEats describes it as “a layered oven casserole dish made with vegetables and meat.” I call it layers of yummmm. Something you could compare to the casserole dish that gets eaten first at a church potluck.
Pastichio – I think of it as the Greek version of lasagna. Ok, I probably just offended two countries in that one sentence and my great-grandparents just rolled over in their graves and mumbled something in Italian about disowning me. Still, that’s the closest thing I can muster in my mind to compare it to. It’s got the noodles, red sauce, white sauce, layers of flavors, and a top with goat cheese.
Tzatziki sauce is creamy and delicious on just about anything! According to Wikipedia, “It is made of salted strained yogurt or diluted yogurt mixed with cucumbers, garlic, salt, olive oil, sometimes with vinegar or lemon juice, and herbs such as dill, mint, parsley and thyme.” Whatever they put in it, it is good on just about anything. I like to this of it as salsa to TexMex cusine is the same as Tzatziki to Mediterranean cuisine.
Last but not least and maybe healthiest is Spanakopita. Spanawhata? This is not your normal “pie”. This is “healthy pie”. Yea, that’s what I’m telling myself because it it stuffed with spinach and cheese in a flaky crusty wrapping. Oh yea. My goodness I love this stuff. The flaky outer is just happiness in my mouth! The baklava at this restaurant is also DELICIOUS. So whether it’s spinach or honey and nuts, you can’t go wrong here.
Greek food is definitely one of my favorite types of food right up there in my book. If you have a chance to try out some, don’t judge the entire countries food with one dish and try out lots of different treats because there are sooo many! There are many many more dishes that fill the menus of Greek restaurants throughout the mainland and 227 habited islands. I highly suggest trying to someday visit an island or two or 227. The food shouldn’t disappoint and the views are just as lovely!
