In modern society, we’re gradually beginning to collectively comprehend that sometimes the deepest wounds cannot be seen and so many people need self-healing.

We’re taught from a young age that being selfish is wrong. Of course, helping other people is important! But someone told me once, “You shouldn’t have to set yourself on fire to keep someone else warm.” However, some people say that you are selfish when you don’t metaphorically “set yourself on fire to keep someone warm.” If that’s selfishness, then I’m all for being selfish in that sense. And people are trying to manipulate you with the idea that you are being “selfish” and they’re wrong. That’s a blanket statement that is drilled into us in order to be more cooperative with others. As you get older you start to realize that caring for yourself isn’t selfish and is fantastic for your mental health.
Rather than live your life entirely for someone or something else, it’s incredibly powerful to ask yourself, “What makes me happy?” Thinking over your life so far and what you want in the future is therapeutic on its own, but booking yourself for some counseling in order to find out more about yourself, is even better. Talk therapy with a counselor, will explore all the stages and moments in your life that have led up to this point. The counselor will not only listen, but spot patterns in your life and ambitions and then give you a different perspective. It’s very calming to understand more about yourself so you can start planning for your future immediately.
Is it worth it?
We all have different ways of coping with stress and life’s challenges. Some people put their headphones on and get lost in their daily workout routine. Some people confide within others, such as a best friend, having chats that go on for hours when things get tough. Unfortunately, some people turn to substances. This not only damages their health long-term but they feel less and less happy. The body learns to adapt and eventually, stronger doses will be needed to get the same kind of temporary relief. Can you honestly say, you make time for yourself? Without family or friends present, just you? We often forget that we need to love ourselves too.
