When you are younger, you tend to take your health for granted in more ways than one. For example, you might think nothing of turning the volume of your music all the way up when heading out on a walk – after all, this makes the music sound better and can also help you drown out the outside world. Or you might go to concerts in your late teens and early 20s thinking being right next to the speakers as tall as a house is the coolest place to stand and get the “full effect” of the performance. Yep, been there, done that.
However, as we grow, it’s important that we start taking care of our health – especially when it relates to our hearing. I’m at that point right now at 45 and have been thinking about getting it checked for a long while now. After all, hearing loss or damage can have a severe impact on your life in many ways. For example:
- Hearing loss will change the way in which you communicate with others, which could affect your relationships, career, and social life.
- Hearing loss will change the way in which you can consume popular media, such as film, television, and music.
- Hearing loss can lead to you withdrawing from certain situations, resulting in isolation and loneliness.
- Hearing loss can have a negative effect on your mental health.
- Hearing loss means you are less aware of your surroundings, meaning you could land yourself in a potentially dangerous situation.
Thankfully, there are various steps you can take to take better care of your ears!
- Seek treatment as soon as you notice any changes to your hearing – whether that means that sounds seem muffled or louder than usual.
- Attending annual checkups with a specialist who can provide you with specific, tailored advice relating to your hearing and overall health. If you experience persistent problems, you should ensure that you book frequent appointments instead of going just once a year.
- Be aware of the telltale signs you are experiencing hearing loss, as it can manifest itself in numerous different ways in every person. Unexpected symptoms could include speaking much louder than usual – at a volume that others in the room feel is too loud but may have seemed quiet to you.
- Turn down the volume of your music, especially when listening through headphones – as they can seriously damage your hearing and, in some cases, have been linked to causing permanent hearing loss.
- Wear protective equipment such as earplugs or headphones whenever necessary. For example, they can be worn when you are swimming or in areas where you may be exposed to prolonged bouts of loud noise, such as in a busy workplace or concert venue.
- If necessary, do not dismiss the idea of getting hearing aids – especially if you are holding on to preconceptions from long ago. While several decades ago, hearing aids may have been ineffective or clunky, modern hearing aids are nothing like their predecessors and can significantly improve your quality of life. Modern hearing aids that are rechargeable not only perform better, but are also much smaller and lighter than previous models. In fact, studies indicate that hearing aids delay dementia as they help minimize cognitive decline, helping you remain more aware of your surroundings.
- Ensure that you always have your TV at an appropriate volume. Not only will this keep your neighbors happy, but it will also ensure that you are taking the necessary steps to take care of your ears and hearing.
