Cut out sugary fizzy drinks
Before you start assessing what you eat, take a look at what you drink. Carbonated drinks can be full of sugar or artificial sweetener, so they’re generally not good for your health. What’s more, they leave you feeling bloated and can keep you awake at night.
If you want an easy way to improve your diet and eat healthier, banish fizzy drinks. Switch to water and small amounts of natural fruit instead. It may sound boring at first, but you’ll soon notice the difference in how you feel.
Convenience food is often unhealthy, but it can be hard to resist. Make sure you’ve always got something healthy on hand for when hunger strikes, and you’ll be less tempted to grab some fries or a cookie. Batch cooking is an ideal way to ensure you have healthy meals ready to go, especially if you’re short on time during the week. By prepping in advance, you’ll always have a healthy meal which can be cooked quickly and with minimum fuss.
Have something sweet
When you eat healthier, you don’t have to avoid sweet treats. No-sugar cookies, banana splits, and homemade date bars are great ways to satisfy a sweet tooth without resorting to junk food. You’ll find that many homemade sweets and desserts can be cooked in advance, so keep something in your fridge or pantry for when you get a sugar craving.
Look at your lifestyle
Your lifestyle will determine what type of meals work best for you. If you have an active job, for example, you may want to eat carbs before your shift for an energy boost. Alternatively, if you’re mainly desk-based, you may want to follow a low-carb or no-carb diet.
Don’t choose your meals based on the latest trends or what other people are doing. Instead, create your own healthy eating regime that’s tailored to your lifestyle. Talk with your doctor or dietician to come up with the best plan for your health.
Eat good fats
Despite the craze for ‘low fat’ foods, there are fats that are good for you. Furthermore, they’re great at keeping you satisfied and making you feel fuller for longer. If you want to incorporate healthy fats into your diet, eat more oily fish, cheese and even dark chocolate! Additionally, switching from a spread to authentic butter can add fat to your diet and enhance the flavor of your food. Remember though, everything in moderation!
Maintaining a Healthy Diet
No matter how you choose to improve your diet, it’s important to introduce long-term changes. Plenty of people try an over-restrictive diet for a week or two and then revert to their usual eating habits. By making small, gradual changes, you can make permanent changes to your diet and enjoy the process of becoming a healthier eater.
It’s not easy with a busy lifestyle to eat health foods. Maintaining the healthy habits for life is even harder. I recently spoke with my dentist who lost 60 pounds this year. She sleeps better, has more energy, and is healthier. Her best piece of advice was to meal plan and prepare all the food you will eat for the week including snacks and drinks on Sundays. And once you start your healthy lifestyle change, do not eat anything unhealthy for 90 days. Yep, if you really want to eat healthier, you really have to make a change. We can do it! It just takes a mindset of wanting to take better care of ourselves for our health.
