Now that social media permeates all facets of modern life, we are inundated with images of perfect snapshots of people’s lives. Over and over we see that one perfect (most of the time filtered) photos of other people’s lives and subconsciously start to believe that’s how other people live 24/7. If that doesn’t mess with your mind and self confidence, I don’t know what could! This definitely can also make it hard for anyone to be content in your own life. If you fall into this category, it is important to deal with these feelings. Being content with yourself and your own life means you need to stop comparing yourself with others especially the fake world of social media. It’s a lot easier said than done!
Read about changes you can make that will help you to boost your self confidence…
Consider hiring a personal stylist for the day
This does not mean that your sense of style is bad or that you need to improve it if you want to be confident! No, no, no! A personal stylist can make you feel great, and that’s the point! A lot of people think that a personal stylist is someone who makes you spend your money in lots of retail stores. Actually, it’s more of an education. A personal stylist will educate you on clothes that suit different occasions and clothes that suit your skin tone, hair color, and body shape. This can make you a lot more confident when dressing yourself, whether for work or social occasions. Plus, who wouldn’t want to feel treated like a Hollywood star every once in a while!
Stop comparing yourself to others
Have you ever heard the saying that envy is the enemy of joy? Stop comparing yourself to other people! You have a very unique life, body, personality, and more! Your DNA is so unique that the possibility of another you existing is one in a trillion! Stop comparing yourself to other people. I know it’s something that most of us are guilty of, and it has only become worse with the popularity of social media. Looking at social media, you would think that everyone has a perfect life. However, it is important to recognise that the person you are comparing yourself with is probably comparing themselves to someone else, and so on. It is a never-ending, destructive cycle. We are all unique, and that is our power. Plus, what people put on social media is never a true reflection of their life. You wouldn’t post your worst photos, would you? So stop comparing yourself and letting your joy slip away.
Don’t feel ashamed of your past
You might be embarrassed about dumb choices you have made in the past and the roads they have forced you down. Let’s think about that for a second, who in the world has made a stupid choice or 100 in their lives? The answer – EVERYONE! lol If you have moved on and learned to make better choices(or are in the process of learning), your life is moving in the right direction. Don’t feel ashamed for anything you enjoy but others might think is weird or any personal connections you have either but be wise in your choices of friendships – I used to hide the fact that I love going to renaissance festivals but who cares what other people think of that!
Being part of a family can also cause shame and embarrassment in people’s lives. I’m sure my parents weren’t so excited about my choices in my youth, but they still loved me. You can’t choose your family but you can always cautiously love them which could even include having to send money to an inmate that you care about. It is your life and you are free to live it in any way that suits you even if that means helping someone you love that has burned all of their bridges with other family members. Just keep in mind, often we assume people care more about the choices that we make than they actually do. Most people are too busy being wrapped up in their own issues to care. Like one of my bestie said to me once, “You wouldn’t worry so much about what other people think of you if you realized how little time they spend actually thinking about you.”
Do what makes you happy
One of the problems with society today is that we spend so much time trying to make other people happy, and so we forget about ourselves. While taking care of your responsibilities is very important, remember what my momma always says, “If you don’t take care and love yourself, it’s really hard to take care and love others.” It’s important to get plenty of sleep, have healthy eating habits, and doing things that bring you joy. Do you like to read books? Is there a certain type of TV show you like to watch? Maybe you enjoy having a pamper session from time to time? Or maybe you would prefer to change something about yourself that you aren’t happy with? This can range from getting a piercing or tattoo to having cosmetic procedures or visiting an orthodontist to correct smile issues you have been having. Whatever it may be, it is time to make sure that you do more of what has made you happy. If you do more of what makes you happy, you are naturally going to be happier and more content with your life. The best part about adulting and self confidence is that you get to decide what you want to do and for the most part do not need approval from others as long as it is legal and morally ok to do.
There are a number of different things you can do in order to help you learn how to be content in your own life. Try the suggestions that have been mentioned above, and you are bound to notice some positive improvements in your life and attitude.
