People usually don’t think much about their hearing. They listen to sounds and don’t consider how their ear works or even if it’s working optimally. For context, a concert is usually above 100 dB and a lawnmower can reach 90 dB.
So what can you do to identify if you have hearing loss and what are some immediate steps to take to help you improve the situation or prevent it from getting worse?

Signs of hearing loss to look out for
Here are some of the most common signs of hearing loss that you should be aware of.
- Difficulty following conversations when you’re in a group or in a busy area.
- Having to ask people to repeat themselves many times.
- Straining yourself to listen to someone speak in a busy environment.
- People telling you to turn the volume down on your music or television.
- Losing your sense of balance.
- Trouble making out consonants in words.
- Unable to hear the bass of a song properly.
- You realize before the pandemic that you relied on reading lips to understand what people were saying.
If you experience any of these then it’s a good idea to speak to an audiologist. Hearing loss can affect your relationships, reduce your productivity at work and even cause long-term stress if you don’t handle it correctly. This is why it’s extremely important to take hearing health seriously.
Steps to take if you think you have hearing loss
First, make sure you immediately book an appointment with your physician or audiologist. Even if you’re not completely sure if you’re suffering from hearing loss, it’s never a bad idea to examine your ears first.
Next, start cutting out loud noises from your life. Reduce the volume of your music, avoid loud sounds when possible and try not to stand too close to sources of loud sounds if you can avoid it. Remember that it only takes around 85 dB for you to be at risk of harming your hearing health.
Lastly, make absolutely sure that you protect your hearing. Hearing protection is incredibly important because it reduces the sound levels around you, making it possible to work in areas such as a construction site or a concert hall without ruining your hearing. Hearing protection is inexpensive and can be custom-moulded to your ears if you’re willing to invest a little more.
Hearing loss is often ignored as a serious health condition, but many of the conditions that worsen our hearing can be completely prevented. Make sure you take precautions to protect your ears and get to know your local audiologist so you can ask them for help.
